New Riders of the Purple Sage (NRPS) first album (released October 1970) is self-titled and features John Dawson (guitar), David Nelson(guitar), Jerry Garcia (steel guitar), Dave Torbert (bass) and Mickey hart (drums). This is my era and this is my music. The Bay Area's New Riders of the Purple Sage began as a Grateful Dead side project and ended up becoming a seminal country cult band. New Riders of the Purple Sage formed in 1969 as a collaboration between Jerry Garcia and songwriter John Dawson. Garcia was a full time member of the group at the time and plays on all tracks. As a result, their sound was placed somewhere between country rock and psychedelic rock, although the agreed-upon philosophy kept it closer to the former. In December, 1971 they played a live radio broadcast with the Dead over WNEW-FM in New York to an audience of millions. Their music is wonderful, characteristic of the early seventies.
